Chapter 5: The Magic Light: Fiber-Optic Systems

I was very interested in this chapter, because it is interesting how fiber-optic systems have greatly benefited new communication technologies. I think it is interesting that fiber optic transmissions are used in everyday communication technologies, such as the video production industry, digital television studios, telephone industries, and cable industries. They also can provide high-speed data highways, and have been used in the medical field. It is amazing how fiber optic transmissions have the ability to carry digital information across long distances.

Fiber optics are composed of the cladding and the core. The light travels down a fiber through a series of reflections, and when it reaches the end of the line, a signal is produced. The fiber is covered by a protective layer, which is called an FO cable.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to FO lines. The growth of FO lines have created a revolution. FO lines are becoming integrated with the old, and newer systems will compliment each other. FO capabilities are expected to improve. This will defiantly lead to faster networks and enhanced communication capabilities. The future of FO lines will continuously provide us with very beneficial communication tools.

Chapter 9: Information Storage: The Optical Disk and Holography

There are two categories of optical discs: non recordable and recordable media. However, both categories share the same characteristics. Non recordable media consists of Cd's, CD-Rom's, CD-I's, Photo Cd's, and DVD's. Recordable Media includes CD-R's and DVD's. All of these items provide us with the ability to store large amounts of information. The growth of optical disks has created convergence between various technologies and relevant applications. It is remarkable how different types of technology are interconnected with one another.

Even though optical media can create data storage, have the ability to deliver high quality videos, etc., the concern of privacy issues arise. With this, a balance between government regulations and the consumer's privacy is necessary.

There is also another type of information storage- the hologram. A hologram is a record if the optical information that composes a scene. This field creates an abundance of storage capabilities. Because of this application, 3-D television may be a possibility in the future.

Chapter 15: The Cable and Telephone Industries and Your Home

As stated previously, FO lines serve as a "backbone" to these industries. The goal of the industry is to provide its customers with the ability to control their own systems. A great example of this is Video-on-Demand (VOD). The Internet is also emerging with new ways to gain access to information. I believe that with all new things constantly coming out, it is easy for people to becomed consumed by it. For example, someone on their computer while using VOD, while on the phone is taking it too far. This industry is undergoing quick changes, and new services are constantly being created. Although these services offer freedom, I believe that enough is enough. I don't think that it is necessary for new things to keep being created.
